Chehak Trust, Mumbai
Sahyog is a community-based organization working for the education and empowerment of women and children in the Kurla-Andheri-Ghatkopar Slums in the Mumbai area since the year 2000. They have been working to bring about sustainable change in low-income communities with a special focus on Women and Children through enrichment education, vocational training, skill training, and special education.
Sangharsh is one of the community rehabilitation programs run by Sahyog, an initiative of Chehak Trust, they work with children between the age group of 0 to 20 years on early identification and intervention for children with disabilities. This is achieved by raising awareness among stakeholders in the community, providing education and rehabilitation for children, and enrolling them in special education schools or vocational/ employment opportunities.
They approached AMF to conduct an awareness and a workshop for their staff and core team. Ms. Aditi Moghe & Ms. Manali Contractor from AMF conducted an awareness program on Specific Learning Disabilities and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) for 21 staff members and further conducted an orientation workshop on Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyscalculia and its strategies. Also an orientation session on Certification Procedures and Accommodations for students with SLDs for 7 core staff members over 2 days.
The staff was oriented to definitions, types, red flags, screening and strategies for SLDs and ADHD. They were also explained the process for certification for SLDs and the boardwise accommodations. The sessions were interactive and activity based.
