Marathi Reading Assessment Tool

Curriculum based measures (CBMs) are brief measures of core academic skills that are used to screen and monitor the progress of students who may be struggling. In English, a range of assessment tools based on over forty years of research are available. However, no such assessment tools are available in Marathi.

AMF is collaborating with Acadience Learning (formerly the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) program) and with Aapanach, a Pune-based education action NGO, to develop oral reading fluency measures in Marathi for grades 1-10, with high reliability and validity. These tools will help identify students in Marathi schools who have difficulty reading.

Primary classroom teachers can be trained to administer and score these tests and use them to assess children’s reading fluency in Marathi in order to identify those having difficulty so that appropriate interventions can be undertaken.

Once the methodology is validated, the development of assessment tools in other regional languages in India may be undertaken.

Empower™ Reading Program

When children struggle with their reading, it interferes with their learning. The Empower™ Reading Program developed at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada, is an evidence-based English language reading intervention program based on years of peer-reviewed research. Empower™ Reading Program provides educators with professional development in decoding and spelling. Our trainers train, coach, and mentor educators in schools across Maharashtra.
